Hi! You have completed the first lesson of The Boy and the Cabin series called "I want to find God." There are many more stories in this series, but before we go on, I want you to know that you can answer questions and get points for these lessons, too. Go to this link and you will learn about some of the wonderful things that are waiting for you.
Now, on to our next lesson…
The Campbells didn't have any electric light so they just used an oil lamp set in the middle of the table. They didn't have a telephone so if we wanted to hear from them we had to go to their house. We are very fortunate today because we have electric lights and telephones, and now even the Internet.
You are probably wondering what Campbells taught my friends and me around the table on Friday nights. They taught us about God. One of the first things we learned was that God is eternal. This means that He had no beginning and He has no end. He has always been and He always will be. Psalm 90:2 says, "Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God."
Another thing we learned was that God was all-powerful. When we think of man's power we often think of man's using his muscles, his big machines, or his weapons to exert his power over other people or things to make things happen.
God does things by the word of His mouth; God speaks and things happen. He doesn't even need to raise His voice! That is power! "God said…and it was so," is repeated over and over again in the Bible. Campbells read the first chapter in the Bible and then counted aloud the times this phrase appeared and what happened. Let's look at some of them.
And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. Genesis 1:3
"So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so." Genesis 1:7
"And God said, 'Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.' And it was so." Genesis 1:9
"The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good." Genesis 1:12
"And God said, 'Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.' And it was so."Genesis 1:14-15
"What a powerful God," we exclaimed, "Who created everything by the word of His mouth!" What an exciting Friday night that was for us! We left the cabin that night knowing what an incredible God we have!
