Jacob has left home heading to his uncle Laban's. On the way, he has an unusual, life-changing encounter with God in his "Jacob's ladder" vision at a place he called Bethel (Genesis 28:5-15). God affirms His blessing on Jacob and adds additional promises particularly suitable for Jacob in his present situation, promises which remind us of Psalm 23.
