A Journey of Faith with the Patriarchs (Genesis 12–50)
Session #15
Jacob responds to God's "awesome" appearance to him at Bethel with the first vow found in Scripture (Genesis 28:16-22).
Then we jump ahead to the second encounter with God, this time in a wrestling match at Penuel (Genesis 32:24-32). At this meeting God gives Jacob a new identity—Israel—after he has admitted his true identity and submitted himself to God.
We revisit Jacob's "ladder" vision where we learn the meaning of "Emmanuel" and re-use the framework of God's promises to Jacob to apply God's assurances to us of His presence, protection, preservation and persevering promise.
