How to Build a Shadow Box for your Awards

Buy TWO identical picture frames suitable for certificates (8.5"x11"). Also buy a small amount of velcro (be sure to get some of both types so that you'll have pieces that can stick together.)

shadowbox 1

Take the glass out of one of the frames and then reverse the backing so that the hooks and stand are showing out the front of the frame rather than the back (see picture #1).

shadowbox 2

Then turn this frame over, to what is normally the back of the frame, and attach some small pieces of velcro at the top and bottom (see picture #2—the green position spots are optional; put on enough velcro to hold your frames together but not too much so that it becomes difficult to pull them apart when you want to add new awards.)

shadowbox 3

Now take the other frame. Leave the glass in it but take out the heavy cardboard backing with the hooks and stand. Turn the frame over and put velcro on the back of this frame, matching the positions of the velcro on frame #1 (see picture #3).

shadowbox 4

Then put your award picture into frame #1. This becomes your "bottom" half of the shadow box. Carefully place your frame #2 on top and press the velcro pieces together (see picture #4).

As you get more awards you can simply pull the top frame up (carefully), slip your new award into the bottom section covering up the earlier award(s), and then press the top frame back into place.

You can hang your shadow box up on the wall or stand it up on your dresser or table.
