Level 3, Lesson 4Rebekah at the Well
Originally published by Ernest Manning's Radio Sunday School MissionThis lesson is based on the Scripture found inGenesis 24:1-67Isaac had grown into a tall young man, when one day his father, Abraham, called his most trusted servant to his tent. He made him sit down beside him, then said solemnly: “I want you to go on a long journey, to the city of Ur, from which I came, and find a wife for Isaac, my son, from among my own people. I am too old to go on such a long journey myself, so you must go for me.” Eliezer was very proud to be sent on such an important errand for his master.
Kneeling down under one of the trees, Eliezer prayed to God to help him to choose the right wife for Isaac; then he sat down near the well to rest. Before long he saw a young girl coming out of the city to get water from the well. Eliezer was so tired and thirsty. “I will ask her for a drink,” he thought, and if she gives me a drink and offers to water my camels, then I will know that this is the girl that God has for Isaac.
“Why, yes, drink as much as you like,” replied the girl, and when he had finished drinking she said: “Now I will draw water for your camels, too.” She emptied her pitcher into a trough and ran back to the well to refill it. Again and again she filled the trough until all the thirsty camels had finished drinking.
“My name is Rebekah,” she replied, “and my brother’s name is Laban. We have plenty of room for you, and straw and food for the camels.” So Eliezer went with Rebekah to her home, and her mother and brother brought him food and drink. But Eliezer would not eat until he had delivered his message, and given Rebekah the beautiful presents he had brought. Then he asked her if she would go back with him to be Isaac’s wife.
Eliezer was very happy, too, and thanked God for helping him in his search, and for bringing him safely back to his master. QUESTIONS |
